Divaad – Artist Statement

Early Life…

DAVID WOODSFORD, Sculptor, ArtistI was born in Victoria, BC, in 1963. I’m a totally right-brain, left-handed Aquarian; I grew up in an era where most people didn’t accept or understand people who were naturally right-brain dominant. We were made to try to fit into the mold of “normal”, which was never part of my true nature.

I learned to write Right-to-Left, rather than the normal Left-to-Right method.

Working with Wood …

I began carpentry at a very young age under the guidance of my grandfather. I realized later in life that he really did give me the “tools for the trade”. I only excelled in math, PE, and drawings (art) while in school. I always had an active and vivid imagination. I went on to become a pro soccer player, but later found out my calling in life was to be an artist, specializing in wood carvings.
DAVID WOODSFORD, Sculptor, ArtistI started carving in the 70’s, with a series of Whale Tails. Very soon, I advanced to letting my dream-time imagination inform the creation of my pieces; I had a vivid sense of design and creation that came to me through the medium of dreams. From the clarity I received in dreams, it became easy for me to render them in drawings … and finally in finished wood sculptures. Each time I drew them, it would inspire me anew to create more and more designs using this process. Drawing gave life to the abstract, and dreams gave birth to the ideas. This process became more and more fruitful as time passed.

Creativity …

The net result of this creativity was the generation of many ideas based in drawings; which gives me a wide variety of projects to choose from. It’s sometimes difficult to know which one to start from! It’s my unique “left-handed Aquarius challenge”…!

Chakra MaskIn my dreams, I see the pieces fly, swim and move in all possible ways, so at times I need to take a mental “stop-motion” picture of them, in order to capture a particular expression of each piece which has its own unique “life” to it. This, to me, is the beginning of being an artist. It’s my drawings, more than the wood itself, that determines the final design and colors of the sculpture. I carve single pieces of wood, and also laminated pieces of wood; I love both methods of expression.

I also incorporate mathematics into my work: such as equality, symmetry and proportions.  Numbers play a huge role in the creation of my pieces.  Besides imagination and fantasy, proper engineering for balance, weight distribution, etc is vital to creating the finished product.

So really, from flying to crawling to smiling faces, I carve what I feel I need to express in that particular moment in time.
